Panthers steamroll North Brookfield, 54-24

Way to go girls! Great Jobs by all.

NORTHFIELD — Powered by stifling defense, there wasn’t much doubt Tuesday night when the Pioneer Valley Regional School girls’ basketball team cruised to a 54-24 win over North Brookfield High School in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division IV Girls’ Basketball Tournament at Messer Gymnasium.
The Panthers (12-9 overall, 4-4 Franklin County South) blew the game open early by starting the game with a 14 points before the Indians scored their first basket exactly seven minutes into the contest. From there, the Panthers led to the final buzzer.
In the first half, the Panthers held North Brookfield (9-12 overall) to two layups and three free throws before taking an insurmountable 31-7 lead into the break.
“These girls, they work hard on defense all year round,” Pioneer coach Meg Burrington said. “Really, the backbone of it is communication. Our back side of (Caroline) Merkele and (Olivia) Rowe, they just communicate and they shift so well. They’re disciplined keeping their hands up and sliding.”
Rowe anchored the Panthers’ frontcourt, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Guard Jess Scoville scored a game-high 15 points while also adding 7rebounds, 4 rebounds and a block. Merkle finished with 9 points and 9 boards.
The Indians sat back in a 1-2-2 zone for the majority of the game that allowed easy baskets underneath for the Panthers, thanks to their constant ball movement on offense.
“We did our homework and they worked hard in practice,” Burrington said. “They knew the game plan and they could have done this on their own. This group of seniors, they know what it’s like to play in the tournament and the different intensity you have to bring and they brought it tonight.”
Pioneer hit a lull to at the start of the third and did not make a field goal until Maddy Tyson’s (7 points) mid-range baseline jumper with 3:35 remaining. The Panthers ended the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 15-point lead going into the final frame.
Pioneer outscored the Indians 14-9 in the fourth, including a 9-0 run in the final 3:34 to seal the victory. North Brookfield’s last field goal came on a Magan Jolin layup with 5:11 left.
Jolin led all Indians scorers with 5 points. Kylie Bulger, Rachel Orsi and Tabitha Earls all scored 4 for North Brookfield. No one on its roster converted more than one field goal.
The Panthers now turn their attention to No. 2 Quaboag, which has won the WMass Division IV Tournament three consecutive years.
“I know quite a bit about them. I went and watched them … It’s the same girls playing,” Burrington said. “We’re prepared for them and we are going to try our hardest.”
Despite finishing with 41 rebounds, Burrington felt the Panthers still need to improve their rebounds to advance in the tournament.
“At halftime, we were getting a lot of rebounds and we were ripping them out,” Burrington said. “But I told the girls on Friday against Quaboag, we’re not going to be able to rip them that easy.”
Tip off from Quaboag High School is set for 7 p.m on Friday.
